Luin juuri Risto Murron uuden kirjan Miksi Suomi pysähtyi? Murto sivuaa teoksessa lyhyesti myös Wärtsilän strategista arviointia energian varastointiliiketoiminnasta. Kiinnostavaa kerrontaa tässä kohtaa, kun päätöstä jatkosta ei tunnetusti ole vielä tehty.

Täytyy myöntää, että kurssireaktio yllätti. Tällaisia pudotuksia näkee harvoin Wärtsilän kaltaisten yhtiöiden kohdalla tällaisten tulosten jälkeen. Näihin on tottunut lähinnä teknojen kohdalla, joiden businestä on hankala ymmärtää ja seurata, ja joissa odotukset näyttelevät aina suurta roolia kurssin kehityksessä. Se on fakta, että tulosjulkistusta edeltävä kurssitaso perustui ruusuisiin tulevaisuuden odotuksiin, joihin kylvettiin tässä tulosjulkistuksessa epäilyksen siemen. Reaktio oli tällä tavalla tarkasteltuna oikeutettu. Jos muistan oikein, Wärtsilä kertoi aiemmin yhdestä segmentistään ja odotuksistaan sen tulevaisuuden suhteen jotakuinkin tällä tavalla: “Tuntuu siltä, että olemme jonkun suuren äärellä”. Ehkä tämä kaikui sijoittajien takaraivossa, ja energiavarastoinnin tilauskertymänotkahdus vei maton joidenkin optimistien jalkojen alta. Mutta, kaikki näyttää edelleen hyvältä. Osaaminen, tulevaisuuden kysyntä ja markkina-asema kohdillaan. Näillä tiedoilla Wärtsilän kyydissä on helppo jatkaa – ja jos on optimismiin taipuvainen, projektien siirtyminenhän varaa yllätysmahdollisuuden myös toiseen suuntaan.

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of technology group Wärtsilä, will supply Nordic energy company Gasum with biogas upgrading and liquefaction solutions for their new bioLNG plant. The plant will produce high-quality bioLNG from agricultural and organic household waste. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q4 2024. In addition to the biogas upgrading and liquefaction systems, the Wärtsilä scope includes a 200 cbm storage tank and an export and filling station. The delivery includes preparation for a future system expansion and the installation of a second liquefaction unit. The solution is almost identical to Gasum’s Götene plant, which Wärtsilä is currently delivering and will be started up later this year. The new plant will be commissioned for commercial production at the beginning of 2026.

Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release, 7 November 2024 at 9 AM EET Technology group Wärtsilä Technology group Wärtsilä announces significant advancements in fire safety and acoustic noise reduction for its energy storage systems (ESS), which will enable its customers to stay ahead of regulatory changes while minimising the environmental impact of their projects. These developments, including rigorous large-scale testing and enhanced noise mitigation technologies, further position Wärtsilä as a leader in safe and community-conscious energy solutions. Wärtsilä has recently completed its third and fourth rounds of large-scale fire testing following the 2023 testing done for the Quantum energy storage system, surpassing the mandated UL 9540A testing standards for its newer generation Quantum High Energy and Quantum2 energy storage systems. Conducted in partnership with CSA Group at their lab, these tests involved purposeful ignition of the enclosure until the fire was self-sustaining. Both the Quantum High Energy and Quantum2 enclosures fully consumed all available fuel. Data from the test show no risk of propagation from the initiating unit to adjacent units with all modules remaining below cell venting temperatures. This approach is designed to simulate a worst-case scenario and exceeds current industry standards. Wärtsilä is one of the only battery energy storage companies globally to perform such extensive fire safety evaluations. Wärtsilä also hosted key stakeholders to witness the tests, including regulated utility representatives, fire protection consultants, and insurance and owners’ engineers. The fire testing also conforms to the forthcoming CSA TS-800 standard, which will set new benchmarks for the safety of energy storage systems.

News Powered by Cision Wärtsilä engines to deliver reliable power for generating facility Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release, 13 November 2024 at 2 PM EET Technology group Wärtsilä Technology group Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply generating sets and auxiliary equipment for Tampa Electric Company’s new generating facility in Florida, USA. Under normal conditions, this plant will generate power for the company’s customers throughout the service territory. Under special conditions, the plant will have the capability to operate in island mode to provide a reliable and resilient source of electricity for a military base. The project is being delivered in two phases, and the orders with Wärtsilä were booked in January 2023 and December 2023. The first phase of the MacDill Power Station is scheduled for completion in the latter part of 2024, and it will operate with two Wärtsilä 50SG engines running on natural gas fuel. Commissioning of the second phase is expected to take place in the second half of 2025, and that too will be powered by two Wärtsilä 50SG engines. The total output of the plant when fully operational will be 72 MW.
