I’m not sure if our thinking in the grandest sense of things is that different, but I on the other hand tend to think that the reduction in the need for expertise will quite likely happen in the future. Or at least a radical transformation of the current “IT professional” job roles will happen. If one visits the museums of Europe, there always are these extremely beautiful writing desks that were build in the past. Clearly there used to be extremely talented artisans building those, but for some reason despite all our modern wealth, our writing desks are hideous, bought from Ikea. What the hell happened? Where are all the beautiful handcrafted writing desks? Well it turns out that the price of human labor only goes up, while technology drives down the cost of machines, so all those master artisans went extinct as they were replaced by unskilled labor (cheap humans) combined with extremely productive machines. And that’s why my writing desk is ugly. Can the same thing happen to artisan coders we employ today, who are carefully handcrafting beautiful, well written code? Certainly, and I believe we already have the technology. If I’m writing functions with a high-level programming language, there usually is this magical technology, built by some of the smartest people in the world, called a compiler, which takes care of translating my crude creation into working machine code. Writing machine code or some low-level programming language instead would suck, and it would be extremely time-consuming and expensive to do so, which is why I’m extremely thankful that compilers have been invented. What is the next logical step for compilers? Instead of having them translate high-level programming to machine code, we should continue moving up and have them translate natural English language into machine code. Despite what my quality managers, compliance managers and humanist friends tell me, writing English in the modern world is actually a low level unskilled job, so you could probably get away with paying these people 30 €/hour writing MS Word instead of 100 €/hour for VS Code. Once the cost advantage for cheap unskilled labor using more intelligent machines is large enough, it’s game over for expensive artisan coders, and we will all get our custom code from a coding equivalent of an Ikea. By this point, the IT Architects are usually screaming at me that programming is much more complicated than that. Sure, and it’s a fair point, but the process has already begun, and the technology will gradually get better and more capable. I don’t write simple scripts anymore or pay others to do it. I just ask my LLM to do what I want and then refactor the code 5 times and pick the output I like the most. And all these people who could have done work coding simple scripts have to retreat up the value chain or be fired. Eventually in the near future, we will go after some of the more skilled jobs traditionally done by junior coders and once again, they will have to retreat up the value chain or become unemployed. This process only goes one way, and once market share has been lost by traditional artisan coders, they will never gain it back. In the past, there used to be this huge bubble in the ICT sector, having millions of American women as switchboard operations with some crazy projections for future demand needing millions and millions of more as phones got more popular. Now, the number of women employed by switchboard operations is around zero. Because that’s how you traditionally make money as an investor; by using a tremendous amount of capital to attack the demand for expensive human labor and replacing it with machines. Granted, I’ve only talked about coding which is a subset of “IT professionals”-sector, but the case could be made for most of the other jobs within the field and frankly, multiple other high paying human-labor-intensive expert jobs. Once some nerds figure out how lawyer language actually works, there will be significantly fewer reasons for regular people to pay huge fees for simple consultations with lawyers. And frankly I’d rather quickly stick some medical sensor up my butt and give the data to Apple Healthcare than wait 10 hours inside a healthcare center for some arrogant expensive public healthcare doctor to prescribe me some basic antibiotics. Most IT professionals I meet, and their labor could be at least partially replaced with sufficient investment of capital and time, and there is a huge financial incentive to do so, which makes it happening in my opinion quite inevitable. So in the future, many of these people working in traditional IT will have to retrain or find some other form of work, most of which might not even have been invented yet. For the next 1-5 years things don’t look this gloomy though, and the demand probably actually increases. Also, different markets move at different speeds and there will always be demand for some kind of “IT professional” work. But let’s say in a time frame of 10 years or more, I think it will be a bloodbath and there will be significant reduction both in coders and somewhat equivalent IT consult roles and also companies acting as middle men between human labor and the people who need IT work to be done. That business model has a life-cycle, and I believe it’s less eternal than we usually tend to think.

Hi Thomas, and welcome aboard! Great to have an investor from Siili here in the discussion; Siili is a fantastic company—I’ve followed it for many years. You asked, “Are you afraid of overcapacity in the IT consulting industry due to the implementation of AI for software development?” This is a great question! Those of us who grew up in the Knight Rider era have been waiting for KITT to wake up. Rarely have I been as excited about new technology as I am now Still, I’m cautious not to contribute to the hype surrounding it, as is often the tendency in our industry. I believe IT consulting will indeed undergo a significant transformation over the next ten years, largely driven by advancements in tools and AI technology. Developers will become more efficient, achieving much more in less time, as you mentioned. At present, we are still in the early stages of this development, and new technologies seem to be increasing demand for IT services rather than decreasing it. In this transformation, what I find exceptional is how it levels the playing field for all IT companies. All knowledge and tools are almost freely available to everyone. Some companies believe they can build a competitive advantage by being the fastest or by focusing on AI technology, but in reality, all companies implement the same systems, and skills develop at the same pace. I don’t believe these generative AI technologies will create a massive competitive advantage for individual companies unless they’re actually developing those tools. But it’s precisely this easy accessibility of technology that makes it so significant. IT companies are typically the first to implement new tools, and people turn to them when expert knowledge is needed. Will demand decrease as technology progresses? It’s hard for me to see that happening—in fact, I believe every company will become an IT company to some extent. Roles will certainly evolve, and some tasks may be needed less, but at the same time, new roles will emerge. Humans have a unique ability to create things we can only imagine. The technical complexity of building things may gradually decrease, but imagination remains the limit. As a sci-fi enthusiast, I dream of smarter systems like the Babel Fish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This is now closer than ever, and I’m writing this with AirPods on. I don’t think it’ll be long before these same headphones simultaneously translate all languages on the fly, making trips to the airport much more interesting. And what about cars? I’ve already paid for self-driving functionality, but I think it’s pretty underwhelming. Refrigerators? My fridge isn’t any smarter than it was 30 years ago—maybe it keeps food fresher; I’m not sure. Washing machines? No real changes in decades that make the device smarter or reduce the work I have to do. I still have to figure out each time what clothes can go together and which need separate washing. There are countless examples like this, and some companies will eventually bring the intelligence we’re looking for to these products. In my view, there are still too few IT professionals, despite what it may feel like in a recession. The IT field, as we know it, is very young. It has grown tremendously over the last 10–20 years, and I don’t see a future on the horizon where the need for expertise radically decreases or disappears. IT service companies benefit both from technological advancement and from a shift in work culture—one where people seek meaningful work through purpose-driven missions. We no longer want to commit to a single employer and a specific role for our entire careers; rather, meaning comes from different projects we take on. I’ve also wanted to be: a professional skier, a fighter pilot, a lumberjack, an entrepreneur… and an IT professional. Meanwhile, my mother worked 40 years in the same job at a regional hospital—she enjoyed it, but that was never my goal. IT service companies are appealing workplaces for people like me who want to take on multiple different roles and tasks. There are a lot of us today. Our industry has already had a clear overcapacity situation for some time, evidenced by a drop in job openings and several change negotiations that companies in the field have had to hold. Competition for new projects is fierce. I don’t particularly fear this situation, nor do I believe many others do—companies have long adapted to the current operating environment. At Witted, this has meant f.e. investing in building an highly efficient commercial organization. The market is what it is—the same for everyone. You also asked: “And how come there isn’t more consolidation in the Finnish consulting industry, when share prices are historically low and intrinsic value (as Warren Buffett calls it) is a lot higher than today’s levels?” I’ve wondered about this myself, both as an observer and from the perspective of a consolidator. It’s no secret that Witted wants to grow both organically and inorganically. This has meant that a significant portion of my time has gone into trying to find suitable investment opportunities. It hasn’t been easy. In my view, consolidation has become bottled up. In “normal times,” this would be the stage where consolidation would be heating up. Some clients have begun concentrating purchases with fewer partners in the past 12 months, and procurement organizations have gained more power. As the number of contract partners decreases, there’s a strong interest among suppliers to merge. Since clients don’t want to lose their best experts, they also benefit from consolidation. So why isn’t this happening? To me, supply and demand aren’t matching up in the usual way. The valuation levels of public companies have factually (as Inderes puts it) dropped to historically low levels, but companies’ perceptions of their own valuations haven’t followed this trend. Private companies, meanwhile, don’t anchor their valuations to public companies but to history and what someone has previously paid—ultimately creating a bottleneck. IT companies’ valuations have been positive for over ten years, so it’s tough to lower asking prices. This is human nature; we act similarly when it comes to our homes. I wouldn’t sell my home at a significant loss unless I had no other choice. I’d rather wait for the market to recover. Whether this is smart will only become clear in hindsight for each company. Meanwhile, M&A activity in the Nordics has shown signs of recovery, and it seems that many P/Es are now actively on the move. I could imagine this activity intensifying if interest rates fall. But this is just my own reflection on these themes. Your perspective could be just as good, or even better :-). What are your thoughts on these topics? Siinä IT-ammattilaisten arvo nähdään vähenevän automaation ja halvan työvoiman korvatessa heidän nykyiset tehtävänsä. Tulee mieleen Hollywood elokuvat kuten ”I, Robot” tai jopa Matrix :). Silti - näin voi käydä. Vuosien saatossa oma käsitys ajankulusta on muuttunut. 2 vuotta menee ihan hetkessä, 5v on lyhyt aika ja tämä edellinen 10v:kin tuntuu menneen vauhdilla. En tiedä muistaako kukaan, mutta 2014 vuoden kuumin keksintö oli ”Real-Life Hoverboard” tuttu laite Back to the Future 2 elokuvasta. Hintaa tuolla oli 10k€. Tiedän monta ystävää, jotka lapsena ovat tuollaisesta haaveilleet, mutta en ole nähnyt yhtään tuollaista laitetta kaduilla. Menee yllättävän pitkään ennen kuin maailma muuttuu. Vaikka käsityönä tehdyt pöydät korvautuivat teollisilla vaihtoehdoilla, käsityötaitoa ja asiantuntemusta ei koskaan täysin unohdettu. Päinvastoin, tänä päivänä käsintehdyt pöydät ovat arvostettuja luksustuotteita. Samalla tavalla, vaikka automaatio vähentäisi joitain IT-ammattilaisten rooleja, se ei välttämättä hävitä inhimillistä asiantuntemusta, kuten ohjelmointiosaamista. Vaikka ohjelmistojen kehitys automatisoituu ja kehittyy, IT-ammattilaisilla tulee aina olemaan rooleja, joissa tarvitaan luovuutta, ongelmanratkaisukykyä ja harkintaa – aivan kuten taidokkaita pöytien valmistajia arvostetaan tänä päivänä. Itse näen arjessani että hankalimmassa paikassa ovat nuoret, uudet osaajat. Ensimmäisen ja toisen työpaikan löytäminen on mennyt hyvin hankalaksi. AI kehitys ei tällä hetkellä ole tukenut nuorten työllistymistä alalle, päinvastoin, moni työtehtävä joita annettiin nuorten tehtäväksi, tehdään nyt automatic. Osaamisen syvyys ja kyky soveltaa korostuu. @Putti Ihana kysymys. Oon joskus miettinyt tuota asiaa ja olen myös keksinyt monta tapaa, jolla tuota ei kannatta tehdä. Nooh se on aina tietysti perspektiivistä kiinni. Vuodesta 2014 mulle jäi mieleen että ensimmäistä kertaa ikinä halvat virtuaalitodellisuuslasit olivat muuttuneet todellisuudeksi ja pääs heittäytymään täysillä niihin maailmoihin. Paljon muutakin vastaavanlaista sci-fi teknologiaa on tullut ihan viime vuosina saataville. Robotti-imurit olivat ihan mahdotonta tulevaisuuden teknologiaa ja nyt siitä saa Gigantin tarjouslaarista satasella tai parilla. GPT-papru julkaistiin vuonna 2018 ja vielä muutama vuosi sitten mietin itse että GPT-2 on liian raskasta ja tehotonta pyörittää, ettei siitä ole kuin teknologiademoksi. Nyt pari vuotta eteenpäin ja koko maailmalla onkin tehokkaat tsättibotit ilmaiskäytössä ja malleja on tulossa vakiona ihan puhelimen rautaankin. Apple julkaisi juuri tehopöytätietokoneen, joka mahtuu aikuisen miehen kämmenelle ja ostettavissa alle tonnilla. Ihan käsittämätöntä! Ei mene kaaliin! Työelämäkin on ihan erilaista kuin kymmenen vuotta sitten. Enää ei tarvitse printtailla sopimuksia ja lähetellä USB-tikkuja postitse vaan kaiken voi tehdä sähköisesti ja melkein aivan kaikkiin käyttötarkoituksiin on valmis äppi saatavilla ja vieläpä pilvessä. Ei ollut mitään Dockereita 10 vuotta sitten käytössä tai toimivia käyttöliittymiä tai kunnon mobiilisovelluksia, vaan melkein kaikki softa näytti ihan hirveeltä insinööripuurolta. Tietysti mikään yksittäinen muutos ei sinänsä ole maailmaa mullistava kuin vasta jälkikäteen katsottuna, mutta kehitys tapahtuu korkoa korolle ja joka puolella näkyy tälläkin hetkellä valtavasti uskomattomia uusia mahdollisuuksia, joista on hyödynnetty vasta murto-osa. Ihmisillä on valtava taipumus aina ekstrapoloida nykytilannetta äärettömyyteen ja kun lyhyillä vuoden parin ajanjaksoilla muutos ei juuri koskaan ole huimaava, niin monesti voi kyllä tuntua, että asiat tapahtuvat hitaammin kuin ne oikeasti tapahtuvat. Et ei siellä vuodessa tai kahdessa nyt keneltäkään työpaikat lähde alta, mutta jos tämmöisiä summia poltetaan rahaa niin kyllä siellä jossain kohti alkaa myös väkisinkin tuloksia sitten tulemaan ja heikoimmat lenkit työelämästä tippuvat pois. Koko ajan tapahtuu hirveästi kaikenlaista mielenkiintoista. Tänään tuli luettua paperia, että kielimallien käyttö luovassa ongelmanratkaisussa yleistyy tieteellisessä tutkimuksessa ja että kun niitä aletaan yhdistämään fysiikkamoottoreihin, niin voidaan korvata osa ihmisten aiemmin tekemästä aivotyöstä. Tämän vuoksi IT-ammattilaisilla loppuvuosikymmenen tärkein päivittäinen grindaustehtävä siellä omalla työpaikalla on varmistaa, että on jatkossakin siinä omassa hommassansa parhaimpaan saatavilla olevaa tekoälytyökaluun verrattuna moninkertaisesti parempi. Vanhat parrat voivat vielä toistaiseksi nauraa tsättibottien typeryyksille ja kokea että uhka kohdistuu vain junioreihin, mutta mikäli työkalut kehittyvät moninkertaisesti paremmiksi seuraavan 10 vuoden aikana, niin siinä voi itse kullekin tulla pienoinen tuskan hiki. Varsinkin sitten kun se tekoälykin osaa ihan samalla tavalla importata frameworkit ja kasata stäkit ja toisin kuin senioridevaaja, niin ne mukana tulevat ohjeistukset on myös tullut luettua

Tässä on Fransin kommentit lokakuun menosta. Wittedin liikevaihto laski hieman odotuksiamme vähemmän lokakuussa ja asiantuntijamäärä kääntyi pieneen nousuun kuun aikana. Myyntikommentit olivat kokonaisuutena positiivisia ja erityisesti Norjassa kysyntänäkymä näyttää vahvistuvalta, mutta Suomen heikosta taloustilanteesta kumpuava epävarmuus säilyy yhä odotetusti korkeana. Työntekijäkohtainen liikevaihto jatkoi hyvällä trendillä, jota tukee nähdäksemme hyvät laskutusasteet ja korkeamman hintatason Norjan hyvä kehitys. Katsauksella oli pieni positiivinen vaikutus ennusteisiimme.
