Betolar studied the circular economy use of ashes generated from Alva-yhtiöt energy production using the SidePrime analysis service
Betolar conducted a commercial AI-assisted research project for Alva-yhtiöt. The project examined the ashes generated from energy production and mapped their potential for use as a cement-replacing binder material, for example in construction, infrastructure, and mining industries.
"It has been great to work on this project. Alva's long background in energy-efficient and sustainable energy production, as well as their goal of carbon neutrality, make them an excellent forward-looking partner in exploring circular economy options," says Olli Kilpeläinen, VP Data Platform & Ecosystem at Betolar.
The project analyzed several different types of ashes generated through various combustion processes. The analysis of the ashes utilized Betolar's AI-assisted SidePrime service, which allows for more efficient and comprehensive analysis of industrial side streams and their potential compared to traditional methods. The visualization of the analyzed data enabled an efficient and approachable way to compare the different properties and potential of materials generated from different processes.
"We are constantly exploring different ways to utilize the surplus ashes from our processes. We found Betolar's service an easy way to map out the various possibilities of the circular economy and bring us new perspectives on options. The service also provided an easy way to compare the impact of different processes on the utilization potential of the resulting materials," says Janne Hakonen, Operations Manager at Alva-yhtiöt.
Thanks to the project, it will be possible to utilize Alva's ashes in the future through Betolar's material network.
