Finnair Traffic Performance in November 2024
Finnair Plc Investor News 5 December 2024 at 9:00 a.m. EET
The number of passengers increased more than capacity, leading to improved passenger load factor - also cargo performed well
In November, Finnair carried 892,700 passengers, which was 9.9% more than in November 2023.
Overall capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), increased in November by 5.6% year-on-year, as additional narrow-body capacity was deployed by Finnair after the wet lease outs to British Airways ended in March 2024. In addition, capacity in Middle Eastern traffic saw clear growth. Including wet lease outs, capacity increased by 5.4%. Finnair's traffic, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs), increased by 9.9%. The Passenger Load Factor (PLF) increased by 2.9% points to 73.9%. The distance-based reported traffic figures do not take into account longer routings caused by airspace closures, as they are based on Great-Circle distance in accordance with the industry practice.
ASKs in Asian traffic were down by 2.4% year-on-year. In North Atlantic traffic, ASKs decreased by 8.0% due to cut frequencies to Los Angeles and Miami. In European traffic, ASKs were up by 13.6%, as majority of the increase in narrow-body capacity was allocated to routes in northern Europe. The Middle Eastern capacity increased by 11.4%, driven by added frequencies to Dubai and Doha. ASKs in domestic traffic increased by 21.9% due to the additional capacity allocated to northern routes slightly earlier than in the comparison period.
RPKs increased by 9.9% in Asian traffic year-on-year. They decreased by 0.4% in North Atlantic traffic. RPKs were up by 9.5% in European traffic, by 18.5% in Middle Eastern traffic and by 17.0% in domestic traffic.
In November, the PLF was 80.1% in Asian traffic, 69.0% in North Atlantic traffic, 71.1% in European traffic, 73.0% in Middle Eastern traffic and 63.0% in domestic traffic.
Passenger numbers increased by 9.6% in Asian traffic, by 0.6% in North Atlantic traffic, by 9.3% in European traffic, by 18.4% in Middle Eastern traffic and by 11.6% in domestic traffic.
Total cargo tonnes increased by 8.7% year-on-year. Revenue cargo tonne kilometres increased by 4.3%.
In November, 71.5% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (79.3%). On-time performance was negatively affected by heavy snowfalls at the Helsinki airport.
Traffic statistics for December 2024 will be published on Wednesday 8 January 2025.
